Joss Whedon had a great night at the Saturn Awards. He took home the Best Director award for The Avengers, which also won for Best Science Fiction film. The Cabin in the Woods won Best Horror/Thriller, and everyone was buzzing on the red carpet about his upcoming TV show Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. We got a chance to chat with Whedon, who told us he would have worn pink sneakers to support Senator Wendy Davis (she of the famous Texas filibuster) if he could have.
We asked him about the popularity of his newest film, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, shot in a super short time, at his house. So, is his next break from Marvel a version of Twelfth Night, shot in an hour? “Well, it’s Twelfth Night, but it’s a Vine,” he joked. So, is it weird that we actually want to see that?
He also talked about the popularity of Joss Whedon, who plays the wildly popular Agent Coulson in The Avengers and why he brought him back to life in S.H.I.E.L.D.. “You spend time with Clark and he’s a delight to work with and he’s great and he’s so versatile,” he said. “I want to say that when we shot the pilot, I was forcibly reminded of what a star he is. Not just a good presence, but a star. He just makes you want to know more. Because he doesn’t give it all away.”
Whedon joked about the the next Marvel property he’d take on. At least, we hope it was a joke. “I think it’s time for the Howard the Duck reboot that nobody expects.”
